Social-Emotional Learning
The role of the Social-Emotional Learning Director at Hardin Northern is to provide services and promote the emotional & social needs of students and families. This is done through implementation of SEL programs, building a positive school culture, and collaborating with students, families, & school staff to provide the best environment for learning and growth.
Mrs. Ruhlen (some students also refer to her as Miss Shelby) is the SEL Director at Hardin Northern and works with students, staff, and families of all grade levels. She provides supportive counseling and skill building to individual students, small groups, whole classroom groups, and parents and a way to foster personal growth. Students are able to meet with Mrs. Ruhlen in a setting that is confidential for them to sort through their mental health, behavioral health, and interpersonal concerns. Mrs. Ruhlen actively works and communicates with teachers and families to alleviate barriers to success both inside and outside the classroom. She is also a liaison between the school and community agencies. These relationships help provide connections to the necessities needed to address the overall well-being of students.
Prior to working in the school system, Mrs. Ruhlen worked at a community mental and behavioral health agency that provided counseling services specifically to children, adolescents, and their families. She maintains her counseling license through the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor).
