It's March so that must mean it is time again for Pop Madness! There was no Pop Culture class this year so our streak of annual Pop Madness nearly came to an end. Thanks to Mr. T's suggestion and some student energy from the Government Class we would like to present Pop Madness 2025: Historical Movie Edition. Students researched over 120 different historical films before narrowing the list down to 64 films broken into four categories: Ancient World, Age of Expansion, World at War, and Modern World. Just one word of caution - although all of these are incredible historical movies, many contain adult themes, harsh language, and depictions of horrific actions so we are NOT listing any movies as a recommendation for children to watch. Here is our Mystery Judge for Pop Madness 2025: I’m a 45-year-old middle school history teacher from central Ohio who loves a good history flick. My favorite time periods in American history are the Founding, the Civil War, and World War II, but lately, I’ve been reading a lot about Irish immigration and NYC’s historic 5 Points. When watching a historical movie, I’m looking for a mixture of historical accuracy and cinematography. It’s okay if the movie doesn’t get everything right as long as it sticks to the basic premise and is fun to watch. Some classic shows that did not make our list included Roots, Band of Brothers, John Adams, Shogun, The Pacific, and M*A*S*H. Each of these was either a TV miniseries or in the case of M*A*S*H we felt the film was overshadowed by the TV series. Some tough opening round matchups include Unbroken vs. Hacksaw Ridge, Sergeant York vs. Saving Private Ryan, Red Dawn vs Platoon, and Hamilton vs. Titanic. Who is your favorite to win it all?

Students have been celebrating March Madness by shooting hoops in the library. Elementary students answer library and book trivia questions to get a chance to shoot, and students in grades 7-12 take breaks from studying to hoop it up on their end of the library.

This week,Mrs. Mast's Class embarked on an exciting journey into the world of paleontology by creating our own mold and cast fossils! Through hands-on learning, students gained a deeper understanding of how fossils are formed and what they tell us about ancient life. They began by using clay to create molds. Students carefully pressed various dinosaur skeletons, into the clay, leaving behind detailed imprints. These imprints represented the "mold" – the hollow space left behind by a buried organism. Next, They prepared a "casting" material by carefully pouring Elmer's glue into the molds. As the glue dried and hardened, it filled the empty space, creating a solid replica of the original object. Once dry, these glue casts were carefully removed from the clay molds, revealing detailed three-dimensional fossils. This activity allowed students to visualize the process of fossilization, demonstrating how organisms can leave behind impressions in sediment that later harden into rock. By creating both molds and casts, students experienced firsthand how paleontologists study fossils to reconstruct the shapes and forms of ancient creatures and plants.
